Economic thought is as old as humanity itself and has long been intertwined with philosophical, religious, and political considerations. The separation between the study of economics and other branches of knowledge occurred only recently, when economics emerged as a distinct discipline with defined boundaries.

Economics is a relatively young science, and Adam Smith's 1776 work, "The Wealth of Nations," is often considered the first systematic and comprehensive study of political economy. However, some argue that the writings of the physiocrats, who preceded Adam Smith, also had a scientific approach and could be considered a starting point for economics. In general, there is debate about the exact birth date of economics as a science, but regardless of this debate, economics remains a relatively recent field of study.
