Translation Module – Third Year

🎯 General Objectives

By the end of this module, students should be able to:

  1. Develop advanced translation competence (Arabic ↔ English / French ↔ English).

  2. Apply translation theories to practical texts.

  3. Analyze linguistic, cultural, and pragmatic aspects of texts.

  4. Produce accurate, coherent, and context-appropriate translations.

  5. Critically evaluate translations.

📌 Specific Learning Objectives

Students will be able to:

1️⃣ Linguistic Competence

  • Identify lexical, syntactic, and semantic challenges in texts.

  • Translate complex grammatical structures.

  • Handle idioms, collocations, and figurative language.

  • Avoid literal translation errors (calque, false friends, interference).

2️⃣ Theoretical Knowledge

Students will understand and apply major translation theories such as:

  • Eugene Nida – Dynamic vs. Formal Equivalence

  • Peter Newmark – Communicative vs. Semantic Translation

  • Lawrence Venuti – Domestication vs. Foreignization

  • Vinay and Darbelnet – Translation Procedures

Students should:

  • Recognize translation strategies in practice.

  • Justify their translation choices theoretically.

3️⃣ Cultural Competence

  • Translate culturally bound expressions.

  • Adapt proverbs and idiomatic expressions.

  • Manage religious, political, and historical references.

  • Apply localization strategies when necessary.

4️⃣ Text-Type Competence

Students should translate different genres:

  • Literary texts (short extracts, narratives)

  • Journalistic texts

  • Legal and administrative documents

  • Scientific and technical texts

  • Economic and commercial texts

  • Audio-visual materials (basic subtitling awareness)

5️⃣ Methodological Skills

Students should learn to:

  • Use bilingual and monolingual dictionaries effectively.

  • Use terminology databases.

  • Conduct terminology research.

  • Revise and proofread translations.

  • Compare multiple translation versions critically.

6️⃣ Critical & Analytical Skills

Students will be able to:

  • Detect translation errors (lexical, grammatical, stylistic).

  • Evaluate machine translation critically.

  • Provide justified correction proposals.

  • Write short translation commentaries.

Introduction to Didactics [S6]

This course provides an overview of the key principles, techniques, and practices involved in English language teaching. It aims to equip future teachers with the pedagogical knowledge and practical skills necessary to design, deliver, and evaluate effective English language lessons. Students will explore the nature of language learning and teaching across the four main language skills like listening, speaking, reading, and writing as well as grammar and vocabulary instruction.

Throughout the course, participants will learn how to develop coherent and goal-oriented lesson plans, apply appropriate methodologies for teaching receptive and productive skills, and integrate assessment and evaluation techniques to measure learners’ progress. The course also introduces concepts of pre-service and in-service teacher training, encouraging continuous professional growth and reflective teaching practices.

By the end of the course, students will be able to plan, teach, and assess language lessons effectively, demonstrating both theoretical understanding and classroom applicability.
